Our Bees and the Environment
In Mauritius, our bees play a fundamental role in maintaining biodiversity. As tireless pollinators, they visit thousands of flowers each day, ensuring the reproduction of many plant species endemic to our island. Without them, a large part of our unique botanical heritage would disappear, bringing with it a cascading collapse of the entire ecosystem.
At Ruchers de l'Est, we have made protecting our bees a central mission. Our beekeeping practices are rooted in total respect for the colony: we use no chemical pesticides, we leave enough honey in the hive to ensure the colony's survival during difficult periods, and we promote floral diversity around our apiaries by planting local honey-producing species.
Climate change represents a major challenge for our Mauritian bees. Temperature variations, increasingly intense cyclones and the reduction of natural spaces threaten their habitats. This is why we launched our beehive sponsorship programme, which allows everyone to contribute directly to the preservation of these essential pollinators. Each sponsorship funds the creation of new flowering spaces and research into bee diseases.
Our commitment goes beyond beekeeping. We work with local schools to raise awareness among younger generations about the importance of bees, we participate in reforestation programmes in eastern Mauritius, and we collaborate with researchers at the University of Mauritius to better understand and protect endemic bee species. Every jar of honey you buy contributes to this collective effort for a greener future.
