Benefits of Raw Honey
Raw honey, as we harvest it in our eastern Mauritian apiaries, is a treasure of nature left intact. Unlike industrial honey that undergoes heat treatment and intensive filtration, our raw honey retains all its enzymes, vitamins and minerals. It is this authenticity that makes it an exceptional food, recognised since antiquity for its therapeutic virtues.
Among the most remarkable benefits of raw honey are its natural antibacterial properties. The presence of hydrogen peroxide, combined with an acidic pH and low water content, creates an environment hostile to bacteria. Our Mauritian grandmothers already used it to treat small wounds and soothe sore throats, a tradition that modern science has largely confirmed.
Raw honey is also a precious source of antioxidants, particularly flavonoids and phenolic acids. These compounds help protect our cells against oxidative stress and contribute to the prevention of many chronic diseases. Recent studies have shown that regular consumption of raw honey can improve blood lipid profiles and support cardiovascular health.
At Ruchers de l'Est, we take care to harvest our honey at the optimal moment of maturity, when the bees have naturally sealed the wax cells. This process guarantees an ideal moisture level and preserves all the aromatic complexity of the honey. Every jar you open is a faithful reflection of the Mauritian terroir: lychee blossoms, eucalyptus and endemic essences of our island are found in every spoonful.
